GloBio Conversations: On Lucy Dawidowicz and Judah Magnes

Join us for a conversation with Nancy Sinkoff (Rutgers University) and David Barak-Gorodetsky (University of Haifa) about their recent biographies of two prominent American-Jewish individuals with global significance: Lucy Dawidowicz (1915-1990) and Judah Magnes (1877-1948). Dawidowicz was a central figure in the post-1945 New York City-based intellectual scene and a foundational scholar in the field of Holocaust studies. Her scholarship helped define American perceptions of Jewish life in Eastern Europe. Magnes, one of the leaders of Reform Judaism in the United States became the first president of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and was a pivotal connector between Jewish communities in North America and the Middle East. What can we learn about the various networks that these two prominent individuals were part of by discussing their biographies side by side? And how do their biographers view their own efforts in retrospect?
